Tag Workshop: Melia Crochet Bib Necklace

On Etsy, the default search function is powered by 14 small but important lines of text. Each listing a seller creates can use these keyword spaces to categorize and label the items for sale. How we use these keyword spaces can greatly effect how often our products are found, and by which types of shoppers.

Studies show that the majority of visitors to sites like Etsy will look for what they need by typing in search terms, rather than by using the category trees provided by the site’s sort function. So the tags that we choose are essential for putting our products in front of the right shoppers.

Melia Bib Crochet Necklace by Lavender Field

Melia Necklace
by Lavender Field

Every week, the Oh Canada Team shares some examples of which search terms shoppers and sellers use to locate different types of products. This week, our Tag Workshop will focus on a unique crochet necklace by Lavender Field. The description reads:

My newest Melia Bib crochet necklace formed with leaf shapes and loops in seafoam, slate grey, light aqua and ivory, dotted by tiny Delicas© Japanese glass beads in teal, seafoam, and ivory which are worked into the design.

This necklace measures about 22" (54 cm).

It has a steel chain with twisted links in gunmetal and closes in the back with a swirly hook, which you can hook into any of the links, making the necklace a bit shorter, if you wish.

bstudio suggests these tags:

jewelry, necklace, fiber, crocheted, needlework,
blue, white, purple, botanical, nature theme,
woodland, statement, adjustable, beaded

Dot Stitch recommends:

jewelry, jewellery, leaf leaves, circles, bib necklace,
international ship, seafoam, slate grey, light aqua,
ivory cream, modern crochet, handmade, contemporary, art jewelry

Dark Ride suggests:

jewelry, necklace, fibre art, crochet, organic quality,
bib collar, aqua blue, sea foam green, lavender mauve,
bead embellished, japanese glass, feminine, gunmetal chain, lace like effect

And the actual tags are:

crochet, jewelry, necklace, leaves,
aqua, seafoam, teal, ivory, wearable art,
fiber, unique, slate, lavenderfield, cyprus

Each list covers the basics of tagging like style, function, color and theme, with variations on some keywords that reflect different terms that shoppers might use to find the same item. The more products and listings you have, the more ways you have of reaching out to potential customers. You don’t have to use tag variations, locations or usernames in every listing to be found, but they are a smart choice when you have the extra space.

Tag Workshop November Sign Up

Tag Cloud

Do you ever get to the tagging stage of the Etsy listing process and draw a total blank? Does thinking of keywords get you down? Join in the Oh Canada Team Tag Workshop exercise!

Every Tuesday, we showcase one Etsy listing here on the Oh Canada blog. Our volunteers suggest unique tag lists for the listing, which we examine and compare. Through this exercise, we can learn about what types of search terms customers are using, and which keywords stand out the most.

All Etsy sellers are welcome to join in our Tag Workshops! You don't have to be a member of our team, or a Canadian seller.

How it Works:

Leave comment on this post with a link to the Etsy listing that you would like tag suggestions for, and you'll be entered into the draw.

Five sellers will be chosen at random from the comments, for the November series of workshops.

Each volunteer selected will be asked to suggest tags for four listings.

In exchange for your tagging ideas, your item will be showcased here on our blog, and your shop will be linked to in five separate posts throughout the month. Plus, you’ll get insights from four other sellers about which keywords shoppers might use to find your item.

All types of shops are welcome to participate - handmade, vintage or supplies.

Taggers will be chosen from the comments on Tuesday, October 26th.

Every week, the Oh Canada Team shares some examples of which search terms shoppers and sellers use to locate different types of products. This week, our Tag Workshop will focus on a wonderful Arabian inspired necklace by Dark Ride. The description reads:

Eight beautiful little antiqued brass connectors are linked together and garnished with seven dark topaz glass teardrops. These are stunning little Czech glass beads with a celsian finish, giving this bead a soft, golden iridescence. The center, larger bead is also a dark topaz faceted teardrop of Czech glass. Stunning colour, and deep, dark glow.

Designed to fall just at the base of the throat, this necklace measures 16 inches in total including the small antiqued brass clasp. The chain used in this design is a smooth pretzel chain. The intricate pattern of the rope-like chain is a lovely compliment to the detail on the connectors.

bstudio suggests these tags:

jewelry, necklace, metal, beaded, ruby red,
bronze, antiqued, filigree, topaz, middle eastern,
triangular, art nouveau, large, swirls

DotStitch reccomends:

jewelry, handcrafted, dark topaz, antique brass, free ship,
international ship, handmade jewellery, eastern arabic,
handmade necklace, ohcanadateam, vintage inspired,
ethnic fantasy, choker necklace, bead jewellery

Lavender Field suggests:

jewelry, necklace, choker, eastern treasure,
middle east style, south asia, burgundy bordeaux,
antique, dark topaz, celsian, free shipping, filigree, elegant

And the actual tags are:

jewelry, short necklace, arabian influence, dark topaz glass,
czech celsian, dark amber brown, faceted teardrops,
south asian vibe, vintage vibe, exotic glamour,
ohcanadateam, niagaraetsyartisan, freeshipping, darkride

Each lists has great examples of shopping terms that can also be found right in the description. This is often the best place to find keywords. If you’re describing your item thoroughly and accurately for the average customer, the text should be rich with useful keywords.

Every week, the Oh Canada Team shares some examples of which search terms shoppers and sellers use to locate different types of products. This week, our Tag Workshop will focus on a pretty bracelet made from vintage earrings by DotStitch. The description reads:

This sweet and oh-so-feminine bracelet is made from a pretty selection of vintage cluster earrings on a silver tone base. Dress up or down - it would look equally good with a little cocktail dress or with jeans and a t-shirt. The earrings that comprise the bracelet are each beautiful in their own right, with heaps of sparkle and personality!

bstudio suggests these tags:

jewelry, bracelet, pastels, pearls, beaded,
vintage jewelry, jewellery, clusters, feminine,
pink, ivory, aqua blue, formal, casual

LavenderField recommends:

jewelry, bracelet, pearls, pearly, elegant,
wedding, vintage, gelato, cluster,
bridesmaid, bridal party, feminine, recycled

Dark Ride suggests:

jewellery, bracelet, vintage assemblage,
upcycled earrings, pastel colours, feminine,
bridal, inspired by nature, flowers, soft pink,
pale blue, pearl white, delicate looking, retro vibe

And the actual tags are:

jewelry, bracelet, vintage earrings, pearl bead,
pale gelato, ice cream color, pastel pink, delicate feminine,
duck egg blue, robins egg blue, pale blue,
jewellery, new zealand, bridal

Each list includes some great examples of how you can combine relevant keywords into tag phrases. Using multi-word tags is a great way to increase your keyword power, as long as each individual tag is a single descriptive phrase. If it wouldn’t work in a sentence describing the actual item, then it wouldn’t make a good tag. Combination keywords can enhance the effectiveness of single words like colors and shapes.

White Flowers Jewelry Box in Silk Ribbon Embroidery

Every week, the Oh Canada Team shares some examples of which search terms shoppers and sellers use to locate different types of products. This week, our Tag Workshop will focus on a beautiful silk embroidered jewelry box by bstudio. The description reads:

Silk ribbon embroidery flowers completely cover the top of this romantic little jewelry box. It makes the perfect spot to tuck away your most cared about possessions!

I have hand embroidered each flower onto an ivory silk dupioni base fabric using various shades of white silk ribbon from natural to bright white. The flowers are complemented with hits of spring green silk ribbon.

The embroidered top is set into a gold color metal frame and the exterior of the base of the container is a gorgeous matte spun gold tone finish on metal.
I have lined the interior of the bottom with pale pink crushed velvet.

DotStitch suggests these tags:

housewares, box, keepsake, treasure box,
trinket box, ribbon roses, silk ribbon art,
jewellery box, jewelry box, white flowers,
bright grass green, ivory cream, romantic, floral garden

Dark Ride recommends:

housewares, jewellery box, container, needlecraft,
small box, embroidered lid, inspired by nature,
white flowers, green leaves, matte gold tin,
lined interior, silk ribbon, feminine, ohcanadateam

LavenderField suggests:

housewares, box, jewelry box, trinket box,
embroidery, silk ribbon, white roses,
romantic, nostalgic, spring green,
small, favor, flowery, metal

And the actual tags are:

needlecraft, accessories, jewelry box, trinket box,
silk ribbon, hand embroidered, silk, flowers,
botanical theme, gold, romantic, jewellery box,
housewares, white

Each list has some great descriptive keywords, along with variations on keywords and categories. If you’re not seeing the views that you would like for a new item or product line, you can try mixing up your category and subcategory tags to see different results. Although direct searches are more common, on Etsy a shopper can narrow down their results using the category tree. Using a variety of headings for your listings can put your item in front of a wider audience.

Always remember that the categories and tags that you choose must be accurate, and describe only what your product actually is. Using irrelevant keywords is not only frustrating to shoppers who want clean search results, but also uses up valuable tag space that could be saved for terms that your potential customers might actually use.

Etsy Help: Working the Geolocator

Globe

When starting a new Etsy shop, before even a single listing is created, it’s important to make sure that every field in your shop’s basic structure is filled in. Each of the sections that Etsy provides for you to create your shop identity is essential in some way to having a great overall shop, and a successful business.

One of the most important sections to fill in is your Location. This information is used not only by your own visitors, but also by searchers all over the site, and even by the curators of high profile features like the Etsy Finds newsletter.

There are three steps to take when marking your shop’s location. The first is to select your country from the drop-down menu - this will show up along with your shipping prices in every listing. It helps let customers know how long a package might take to arrive.

Then you can manually type in your location. The standard format is City, Province, Country, like:

Edmonton, Alberta, Canada or
Melbourne, Victoria, Australia, or
San Francisco, California, United States.

Filling in Your Public Profile

What you type in here will appear as a tiny bit of text beneath your avatar on every page in your shop. Although it’s small, this tiny bit of information is more valuable than you might think. Whatever you put into the location field of your Public Profile works almost exactly like the tags in your listings. Not only can searchers use the Shop Local feature to find sellers from certain places, but the text also becomes a link to all other shops using the exact same location.

So, if you live in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada, but have something in your location bar like “#17 Cherry Tree Lane”, your customers might think it’s cute, but you’ll be all alone when it comes to finding shops by area. If someone clicks on that link, they’ll find only you. If someone clicks on a link from another shop in Winnipeg, they won’t see you at all. But they will find plenty of other shops in your area, some of which might have similar products as you.

Etsy Shops Located in Heaven on Earth

It Must Be a Pretty Lonely Place

Filling in your location with the standard format is essential. Although it may seem like following along with the crowd, it helps keep your shop sorted and easy to find. Plus customers like to have a better idea of where you’re from.

If your location is simply listed as something like Squamish, you’re fortunate to be among the few sellers who’s location is totally unique. But most city names have been used more than once around the world. If you’re not listing your whole location, shoppers don’t have any way to find you in the haystack of other shops.

For instance, if you type London into the Shop Local tool, you will see a variety of recently updated shops from Canada, and the UK. If you want to narrow that down to only shops in Canada, you could type in London, Canada. Then only shops that have both of those words in their location field will show up. Any shops that just have “London” for their location will not be found in that search.

Search for Etsy Shops in London

One Keyword, Two Totally Different Countries

Many sellers list multiple locations for their shops. Some go crazy with lists like “New York, London, Paris, Milan” which is a lot like tag stuffing and lacks the community spirit that we hope for in an Etsy shop.

Other shops will list some of the familiar cities in their area, like “Blackfalds, near Red Deer and Edmonton, Alberta, Canada”. While this will get your shop into more search results, it defeats the purpose of the City, Province, Country format, and creates a stand alone tag that only points to you.

If you live in a very small community, and would prefer to get a better traffic stream from a larger population, you can list the nearest city as your location instead. Technically, listing your location at all is totally optional on Etsy, so as long as you’re not outright lying about what country you’re making your goods in, it’s okay to fudge it a little bit. If you go this route, it’s a good idea to include a little more detail about your location in your profile, if you‘re comfortable doing so.

Can Shoppers Actually Tell Where You're Located?

Can Visitors Actually Tell Where Your Shop is Located?

The third step to setting your shop location is to mark yourself with a pin on the Google world map. This will create a tab for you in Geolocator 3, which is what visitors will see when they click on any location link.

You don’t have to zoom right in and put a pin over your actual house. And if you’re really uncomfortable with the idea, you could put your pin on your area’s capital city, or the nearest large city center. This will ensure that you are still showing up in the correct area, but not letting just anyone know where you live.

Map Pins for Shops Located in Vancouver

No Wonder People Think All Canadians Know Eachother

If you don’t use the map pin as accurately as possible, you risk missing the mark when it comes to location searches. Instead of being in the lineup when someone is looking for products and sellers from your area, your shop’s pin will be way off in the distance somewhere, looking like a weird wallflower. If you were shopping online for something you needed, would you want to pick the person who couldn’t read a map?

Shoppers can also use Geolocator 3 to search listing tags, and see the results by location. So the closer your pin is to your actual base of operations, the easier it will be for people to find you and your products.

Like all aspects of an Etsy shop, the location field should be used with accuracy, and honesty. The more information you can provide to shoppers and searchers, the more potential you have for sales, and loyal customers.

Tag Workshop: Red Haired Art Doll

Every Etsy listing can be broken down into sections, with each component serving a different purpose. The most important aspect of any listing is the photographs, which can invite searchers to click, encourage them to stay and look around, and convince them to make a purchase. But without really effective tags, even the best photos can get lost in the crowd.

Choosing keywords for an Etsy listing can be the toughest part of the job. Even when we know our own creations inside and out, we have to put ourselves in a shopper’s frame of mind to decide which terms will bring the most valuable search results. Every week, the Oh Canada Team shares some examples of which search terms shoppers and sellers use to locate different types of products.

Each lists includes many of the same search terms, with variations on Etsy’s subcategories. When you select your main category, you can also select appropriate sub-categories for your item to display in, suggested by Etsy based on your first choice. As with all tags, it is important to only choose those headings that apply to the actual item you are selling.

The order of your tags can also effect how shoppers find you, because the first 5 keywords are considered the most important for SEO. When creating a listing, you can type in the 4 most important descriptive tags first, and then go back and choose the correct subcategories to maximize your exposure around Etsy.

Tag Workshop: Crocheted Magnolia Bookmark

Magnolia Flower Crocheted Bookmark by Joyous Treasures

White Magnolia Flower Crocheted Bookmark
by Joyous Treasures

This week, our Tag Workshop will focus on a pretty crocheted bookmark by Joyous Treasures. The description reads:

The flower measures about 2 1/4 inches across (5.7 cm), and has a raised yellow center for a 3D effect. Features a dark green stem with 2 narrow leaves.

When I looked at photos of magnolia flowers, I noticed that the petals are usually very irregular, each of the petals are a slightly different shape and size, nor where they perfectly arranged around the center. So I tried to create that effect with my crocheted magnolia as much as possible, so it would look like the real thing!

Did you know the magnolia is the Mississippi and the Louisiana State flower?

Favor My Party suggests these tags:

crochet, bookmark, page marker, sign,
state flower, magnolia, white, yellow,
delicate, silky, handmade

Dolls and Company recommends:

crochet, book, green, gorgeous, petals,
Mississippi, Louisiana, state flower, cotton thread,
high quality, 3D effect, reader, marker.

Oh Canada suggests:

books and zines, bookmark, magnolia flower, opaque white,
dark green, crochet, cotton, lifelike, state flower,
yellow, page marker, delicate, pretty, nature

And the actual tags are:

crochet, bookmark, flower, magnolia, white,
yellow, Louisiana, Mississippi, state,
handmade, green, beautiful, feminine,

Each list shows great examples of alternate terms that shoppers of different demographics might use to search for the same thing. When you’re absolutely stuck for those last few tags, try adding terms from the Thesaurus, or different languages to reach out for a new audience. Remember to only use tags that describe what you item actually is, and to place each individual search term on a separate line.

Tag Workshop: Dandelion Bangle

Once we have created, photographed, and described our latest creation, we come to the toughest part of listing an item on Etsy. Choosing tags that will accurately describe a design, and help it turn up in searches can be a difficult task. Every week, the Oh Canada Team shares some examples of which search terms shoppers and sellers use to locate different types of products.

Dandelion Bangle by The Sage's Cupboard

Dandelion Hollow Bangle
by The Sage's Cupboard

This week, our Tag Workshop will focus on a beadwork bangle from The Sage’s Cupboard. The description reads:

Show off your love for nature’s prettiest weed with a colorful bangle bracelet. This piece is made with Japanese and Czech glass seed beads, using the right angle weave technique. Colors included frosted green, emerald and yellow.

I created the bangle from a hollow, tubular band of woven beads. Emerald colored hex-cut seed beads add sparkle to the edges, and the opaque yellow seed beads mimic the sunny face of a dandelion in full bloom.

Dark Ride suggests these tags:

jewelry, bangle, beadwork,

dandelion, metal free, glass seed beads,
emerald green, bright yellow, flower, weed,
hollow tube, casual, sagescupboard, ohcanadateam

Stuff by Steph recommends:

jewelry, bracelet, beadweaving
jewellery, beaded bangle,
dandelion yellow, grassy green, high quality,
glass seed beads, metal free, bright, ooak,
ohcanadateam, sagescupboard

UxCritter suggests:

jewelry, bracelet, bangle, beaded, beadweaving
,
seed beads, japanese delicas, yellow, green, 7 inch,

The Merriweather Council recommends:

jewelry, bracelet, bangle, beaded,
green, yellow, emerald, seed beads,
beadweaving, dandelion, bright,
casual, round, ohcanadateam

And the actual tags are:

jewelry, bracelet, bangle
glass seed beads, right angle weave, dandelion,
bright yellow, emerald green, nature inspired, beadwoven,
flower inspired, weed, hollow, ohcanadateam

Each list has great examples of keywords that you can pull right from your title and description. This is often the best place to look for tags. Although trying to think of good keywords can feel like hunting for a magic word to bring in views and sales, the simplest solution is often the best one.

The next time you list a new item on Etsy, write down your tags on paper before you even turn on the computer. Try to imagine describing your creation to a customer, using only single words. You might be surprised by how many tags you can think of!

by Nicola since 1972

Just leave comment on this post with a link to the Etsy listing that you would like tag suggestions for, and you'll be entered into the draw.

Four sellers will be chosen at random for the September series of workshops. Each volunteer selected will be asked to suggest tags for three listings.

In exchange for your tagging ideas, your item will be showcased here on our blog, and your shop will be linked to in four separate posts. Plus, you’ll get insights from three other sellers about which keywords shoppers might use to find your item.

All types of shops are welcome to participate - handmade, vintage or supplies.

Taggers will be chosen from the comments
Tuesday, August 31st.

To learn more, check out previous posts in our Tag Workshop series!

Tag Workshop: Crystal Verdigris Necklace

Every week, the Oh Canada Team shares some examples of which search terms shoppers and sellers use to locate different types of products.

Crystal Verdigris Neck Tangle by Dark Ride

Crystal Verdigris Neck Tangle
by Dark Ride

This week, our Tag Workshop will focus on a lovely verdigris necklace by Dark Ride. The description reads:

These crystal clear rondelles are treated to a soft Picasso finish of delicate verdigris-like colours -- soft blue/green/sienna -- that gives the un-faceted tops and bottoms of the beads a very soft sort of look. The sides of the rondelles are clear, crisp and faceted, allowing the light to shine through. They really are beautiful. I couldn't bear to cover any part of them with a bead cap!

I’ve arranged these seven beauties on a double strand of silky smooth antiqued bronze hammer chain. One of the strands is a few links longer than the other in order to achieve a relaxed and tangled effect.

Stuff by Steph suggests these tags:

jewelry, jewellery, necklace, antiqued,
bronze chain, clear crystal, Czech glass,
verdigris, toggle close, dangles,
DarkRide, ohcanadateam, free-shipping, niagaraetsyartisan

If you find that your new item views aren’t what they should be, try changing them up a little. Experiment with different descriptive words and synonyms to see what happens. Remember that when making moderate or drastic changes to a listing, you should renew it to get the fresh aspects to the top of the pack.
