Tag Workshop: Superstar Me Gift Box Soaps

Most Etsy sellers will tell you that having a really great first photo is the key to getting views, and ultimately, sales. It’s true that a fantastic and interesting photo invites people into your shop, but having really great tags is what helps you turn up in their searches. The Oh Canada Tag Workshop aims to help sellers find new ideas for tagging their items that will help shoppers find them.

Superstar Me Soap Gift Set by soapstar

Superstar Me Gift Box with Wooden Soap Dish
by soapstar

This week, our tag workshop will focus on a wonderful collection of all natural soaps by soapstar. The description reads:

If you want to bathe someone special in the spotlight with the perfect gift or just treat yourself to the starring role in your very own 'soap' opera - this fabulous 'soap box' is just the ticket!

This gift box listing includes 3 full size soaps of your choice, a wonderful wooden soap dish, a set of full colour postcards of the gorgeous locations that inspired the soaps and an extra soap sample from the soapstar range. All beautifully presented in an eco friendly Kraft box with gift tag.

Heather Lair Designs suggests these tags:

bath and beauty, wooden soap dish, ohcanadateam,
handmade, scented, woman, postcards,
ecofriendly, gift set, boxed, soap

Joanniel Creations recommends:

bath and beauty, handcrafted, cold process,
wooden dish, soap bar, gift box, diva,
scented, spa set, travel size,
refreshing, artisan, lather

Oh So Sweet Prints suggests:

bath and beauty, soap set, gift set,
handmade, gift box, soap dish, aroma,
natural, travel, cleansing bars, postcards,
calming, soothing, soapstarcanada

And the actual tags are:

bath and beauty, soap, scented,
pamper, boxed, soap dish, postcard,
handmade, natural, bath,
ohcanadateam, kraft, eco

Each list contains some great action keywords! These verb tags are a great way to reach out to new customers by describing what your products can do. When choosing creative terms for your tags, remember to avoid words that could possibly, or maybe, describe your products. Describe what your item is now, and what it actually does, and the right shoppers will find you!

Another great tagging workshop! There are some really great suggestions here like "woman" and "diva" that really help to see an item differently than just its physical properties.

I searched "gift boxed soap" & soapstarcanada shows up on page 3 using "Relevancy". Initially I didn't know this was the shop since the blog shows it as only 'soapstar' under the photo & I hadn't clicked on the image to take me to the shop to learn the shop's full name. I went directly to check out the tags and how efficient they are to find the product.
Next I tried "gift boxed soap set", which dropped the total in the search by half from 400 to 200 hits.
Then I added "wooden soap dish" and only 1 shop was found.

Tags as far as I understand are to be most relevant and most likely to be used to find a product.

So for this item shown
In the Category: Bath and Beauty
Tags I'd suggest as most relevant ~ soap, gift boxed, set, wooden dish, soapstarcanada,...

This is how and what I'd be searching for to try to find a Gift Boxed Set of soaps with a wooden dish. And if I knew the shop's name I'd go straight to that tag with hopes that the shop uses it's shop name as a tag to find it's items quicker.

Another great work-shop! I agree with above comment if you have a lot of customers that know you by name. I'm not a well known shop, so using my shop name may well be a wasted tag for me at this point.

Most tagging guides will tell you that you shop name is a good extra - when you absolutely cannot thing of a 14th tag. It's good to have at least one item tagged with your shop name or username, so that people who have heard of you can find you that way.

There are also a lot of sites, like Flickr, where using your full shop URL is against the rules. But you can mention your username, which potential shoppers can search for. You only need to show up once in a search!

Ux, do you find in your GA or w/ the new Craftopolis tag feature that your shop name is often used as a search term?

Maybe it's because I'm a newer shop too, but I don't find that. The most frequent search terms for me are physical descriptors, followed by action verbs or secondary descriptors.

So for me tagging with my shop name would be going against the rules of relevancy by potentially wasting a precious tag spot.

I also find that a lot of my traffic comes from google, and not from within Etsy itself so if someone did want to search on my shop name in addition to physical descriptors from google, those terms would both be employed by google, whether the shop name is in the tags or not.

You can also do an advanced search on Etsy, where I was able to find this item using "box, soap, wooden" on the 1st page of results. Of course, very few people know about the advanced search, but the information professional in me always goes there first - I just need a little more control when I'm searching!
