Friday Finds: Custom Art Quilt of your favorite Pet by castillejacotton

I was blown away by this intricate and colorful quilt by castillejacotton. Diane worked on this quilt of Delilah, a bull mastiff/golden retriever cross from a photograph and captured her beautifully! Dianne of TheCottageWorkroom obviously has a great eye for spotting materials that can be upcycled into fantastic covers! She saw an antique persian rug that was heavily damaged at an auction, but knew that she could turn it into a gem. After painstakingly cleaning it and using the undamaged bit, this is what she came up with- a striking cushion cover with rich reds, yellow, green and brown. OhCanadaTeam Secret Santa 2011

Once again the OhCanadaTeam held a secret santa gift exchange and it was tons of fun! We decided to host the event on Elfster this year which made matching up givers and giftees a bit easier. It was also fun to be able to ask anonymous questions! Many thanks again to Mary Ann of TheBackyardBear for organizing and coordinating the event. Below are a sample of some of the happy recipients with their gifts.

Joyce has created these beautiful snowflakes ornaments out of ceramic. She first rolls out some clay and then cuts the shape. After brushing the color she then fires the ornament for the second time and brushes a mother-of-pearl glaze to give it some iridescence. Friday Finds: Icewalk by ljangphotography

This glorious picture of Maligne Canyon, at Jasper National Park Alberta was shot by Larry of ljangphotography. Taking avail of a rare opportunity to actually walk below in the canyon (which isn't possible during summer as the water thunders down as a waterfall), the viewer can see how the water here has frozen in time, up close and personal. The walls of the canyon are 50 feet high and it must be breathtaking to do the walk on the riverbed during winter. It's now on my bucket list! Larry has done a brilliant job of letting you almost experience it yourself!

Friday Finds: The Pool After by PrankePaintings

This vibrant oil on canvas painting is a lovely representation of Canadian nature. It's also very reminiscent of the work done by the Group of Seven. Richard of PrankePaintings is a third generation artist from Montreal. His grandfather and father were artists too and the talent gene has definitely been passed on! This one is my favorite because of the starkness of the birches combined with the vibrant fall colors and turquoise water. Looking at this stylish pair of mitts you would never guess that they have been recycled and repurposed from an old brown and turquoise sweater! Teresa of RecycledandResewn started experimenting with upcycling old sweaters into warm cozy mitts by lining them with polar fleece, way back in 2005 and successfully sold more than 130 pairs last year alone. If you've ever thought your outfit was missing that little extra something, there's a good chance you'll find it at IGBijoux. Run out of Montreal, this great shop features the vibrant and refined jewellery creations of Isabelle Gaumont. Isabelle is also an actress, novelist, screenwriter and director. It's a wonder she has the time to make jewellery, but thank goodness she does. She has a wonderful eye for putting the right beads, stones, and colors together. Browsing through her shop is always such a delight.

Oh Canada: Of all the things that you sell, which item or style is your favorite?

Isabelle: I like all my necklaces for different reasons. The long and thin ones for their elegance, the chunky natural stone ones for their personality and versatility, and the multi-strand or crazy chain experiments for their uniqueness and sense of fun. I'm a fan of sparkly crystal, earthy gemstones, colourful glass, groovy resin, and combining all those in unexpected ways.

Oh Canada: Where did you learn your skills?

My wonderful and generous friend Jennifer (shop name: Sparklepod) taught me everything I needed to know to get started. At every opportunity, I learn more techniques to help bring my new ideas to life. I make jewelry to relax. To me, it is not unlike meditation. I hope a little bit of the joy I feel when I compose a necklace can be seen in the finished product.

Everyone has different motivations for making their unique wares. What drives you to create?

Isabelle: I'm a writer and an actress, so I'm constantly creating, but I guess what drives me to create jewelry is a little different. Writing novels is a long, drawn-out job and acting often depends on the schedule and choices of others. Making jewelry allows me to go from idea to finished product more quickly. I find it very satisfying. Initially, I began making jewelry for myself because I could never find exactly what I needed in stores and I hate to wear what everybody else is wearing. Also, as an actress, I audition for a lot of different characters... sometimes on the same day. Changing the accessories between auditions instead the whole outfit makes my life much easier... and my big purse much lighter. Colleagues soon started complimenting me on my necklaces, asking where they could buy them. Being on Etsy gave me a place where they could see more examples of my work.

Isabelle: Because every necklace I make is unique, I would have to say yes. I plan to add a lot more.

Oh Canada: What is your favorite thing about selling on Etsy?

Isabelle: With my crazy schedule, I would not be able to use a system that requires regular actions at specific times. Etsy allows me the freedom to feed it whenever I can.

Oh Canada: Do you have a number one tip for new sellers?

Isabelle: Try different things with your photos and get it right before listing 70 items with bad pictures you'll have to spend a week replacing! And become part of a great team, like this one, and learn a ton from other members :-)

Oh Canada: What is your favorite thing to buy on Etsy?

Isabelle: Steampunk storage and accessories to hide modern technology. Vintage treasures.

Oh Canada: What is the number one best item in your shop right now?

Tough call... but the necklace that got the most hearts and was included in the greatest number of treasuries is "Yellow Stone".

Oh, Canada! The Treasury Challenge is on, and we invite you all to play! Even if you’re not big on curating, there are important ways that you can contribute.

We’ll kick off the new season with a Canadian theme. That is, do whatever inspires you, eh?
To enter, you must:

* post the link to your treasury in the comment section of this blog. If your treasury link isn’t here, your treasury isn’t entered in the challenge.

* use 6 team members in the top three rows. Incorporate as many team members as you like, but there must be at least 6 team members in the top three rows to qualify for the challenge.

* tag your treasury with octchallenge and ohcanadateam

* invite others to play and provide a link to the blog challenge.

Judging -- how about you? Not into the treasury making thang, or just want to sit back for a bit? Please, be a narrow down judge, to help whittle the list of entries down to manageable size for voting. Be one of the first three folks to volunteer in the comment section of this blog to take on this important role

The winner will not only receive a warm fuzzy feeling, but also, in the next challenge, an item from their shop will be used in the top row of every challenge entry.

We'll be running the challenge on a two-week interval. Treasury making will begin on a Monday and end on a Saturday. Then, it's off to the judges! Voting will start the following Wednesday and a winner will be announced the subsequent Monday so that the fun can begin all over again ☺

Shop Spotlight: Junquete's 5 & 10 Variety

What if you suddenly woke up one morning and decided you just had to have a shoe purse, or a pair of Betty Boop earrings, or even a few vintage finds? Where would you find all of that? What if I told you that you could find it all in one place. Well, you most certainly can. At Junquete's 5 & 10 Variety you'll find all that and more.

Norma is a wonderfully creative gal who runs her shop out of Alberta, Canada. Here's a little bit about Norma and her creations.

Oh Canada: Of all the things that you sell, which item or style is your favorite?

Norma: That’s a tough question for me- -I flit like a bird from one spot to another all the time. I think that would be making earrings. That’s what got me through a very rough battle with a virus a few years ago. I love the challenge of turning anything I see into an earring. A friend once said when she looks at an item she sees it for what it is. When I look at that same item I see it as earrings.

I also love doing my shoe purses. They are something that I figured out for myself. I entered a contest to make a purse out of recycled items for under $5.00. I saw a manufactured shoe purse years ago and really wanted one but didn’t have the money to buy it. So because of the contest I took on the challenge. The finished purse came in at 3.95 so it was well under the five bucks. I used a shoe that was a friend’s already wrecked shoe, a belt, and a pair of black vinyl pants with a hole in them and broken chain and conchos. Funny enough it was purchased as a gift for a cross dressing comedian. He loved it.

Oh Canada: Where did you learn your skills?

Norma: I’d have to say self taught. I’ve been sewing since I was a little girl. My mother had a treadle sewing machine (not sure why though, she never used it ever). I wasn’t allowed to touch it but that didn’t stop me. I had to get down and pump like mad and crawl back up to sew. Sewed my thumb. Got a tetanus shot and spanking for that. I’ve never taken a formal lesson in anything I’ve done. It’s been one look at it and see if I can adapt it into something I’d like to wear.

Oh Canada: Everyone has different motivations for making their unique wares. What drives you to create?

Norma: I think what has driven me to do what I do has to be blamed on not having a lot of money to purchase whatever I liked. I’ve seen jewellery I’ve absolutely loved but could never have afforded. I figured making it myself would be the next best thing. So that’s what makes me do it. But for some reason I can’t just make one of something. I have this bad ailment that makes me go overboard! If I am going to make something I might as well make several. That’s my husband’s take on it.

Oh Canada: If you could learn to use any new technique or material, what would it be?

Norma: Silversmith - glass blowing - but I’m afraid of fire!

Oh Canada: Any plans to incorporate a new product into your shop this year?

Norma: I’ve had a few ideas pop into my head. The one thing I’ve wanted to do for so long is make my own greeting cards. They’ve been on my mind for so long now and I can’t wait to get started on some. I’ve been making them for family for some time now. I like to mix it up with some sarcasm at times too.

Oh Canada: What is your favorite thing about selling on Etsy?

Norma: It has to be the thrill of the sale. When someone likes my work enough to buy it, it really gets my heart pumping.

Oh Canada: Do you have a number one tip for new sellers?

Norma: Don’t listen to naysayers! If you want to do it just do it! As well as join this team(Oh Canada Team). The caring and encouragement here is wonderful.

Oh Canada: What is your favorite thing to buy on Etsy?

Norma: Beads- supplies -beads -supplies- bead….

Oh Canada: What is the number one best item in your shop right now?

Norma: That’s a tough one! My shoe purses are pretty darn unique, though.
I also think my Betty Boop collection is an area I haven't expanded yet and need to.

Friday Finds: Vintage Portable Travel Bar

Last week the OSM gave an incredible outdoor concert in the park near our Montreal home. I think that the entire city attended! People came with their lawn chairs and picnic blankets to enjoy the beautiful music. Our own set up was fairly laid back as we also had kids to wrangle, but if we'd had this amazing portable bar set we'd have been picnicking in style!

Jewellery is something you'll find plenty of on Etsy I assure you. But what if you're looking for something that's unique? An original piece just for you that no one else will ever have. Well, then Vitrine is the place for you. Candice is the creative force behind these modern, contemporary pieces that are sure to turn heads. Her work has been sold in galleries in Canada, Europe, and the Middle East, and now you can own one of Vitrine's original one of a kind creations.

Get comfy and take a moment to get to know Vitrine. It's always interesting to hear about the creative process that goes on behind the scenes.

Oh Canada: Of all the things that you sell, which item or style is your favorite?

Candice: I have a few that I call favorites and the thing that they have in common is that they're all wire wrapped. I love how wire wrapping showcases them as unique pieces because no two are ever alike.

Oh Canada: Where did you learn your skills?

Candice: I am by nature a very curious person. I like to find out how things are put together and then try my hand at it. So I ordered a few books on jewellery making from my local library and watched some Youtube videos, and, of course with trial and error perfected my wire wrapping techniques.

Oh Canada: Everyone has different motivations for making their unique wares.What drives you to create?

Candice: I come from a very creative family. My dad paints and my mum sews. My aunts all crochet, knit, or sew. So as young as 3, I remember asking my mum to show me how to embroider. I've never been able to sit down and not keep my hands busy! I love coming up with new ideas and projects. In fact, I usually fall asleep thinking of a new way to showcase a stone or bead. Sure beats counting sheep!

Oh Canada: If you could learn to use any new technique or material, what would it be?

Candice: I would like to take a silversmithing course and learn how to bezel using gemstones.

Oh Canada: Any plans to incorporate a new product into your shop this year?

Candice: I'd like to possibly introduce jewellery with some sort of fabric aspect. I have tons of ideas and never enough time to do them all!

Oh Canada: What is your favorite thing about selling on Etsy?

Candice: Meeting people who are so talented. Some products on Etsy literally blow my mind, and inspire me to keep on creating. I am also lucky that I belong to a couple of teams(including the Oh Canada Team) where the camaraderie and support are so phenomenal that it almost makes you feel like you belong to a guild.

Oh Canada: Do you have a number one tip for new sellers?

Candice: Take the best photos you possibly can of your items. And I'm not talking about getting an expensive camera. Find free software that can tweak your pictures so that they're brighter and more appealing to potential buyers.

Oh Canada: What is your favorite thing to buy on Etsy?

Candice: Handmade soap. Totally luxurious to know a bar of soap was made just for you.

Oh Canada: What is the number one best item in your shop right now?

Candice: I love these AAA rutilated quartz earrings. It's quite rare to find so many rutiles in each stone- it's one of my best finds.

Shop Spotlight: Jen's Dream Decor

I love taking photos and I almost never have them up on display because I never know where or how to display them. How do you put your treasured photographs up in an elegant and fashionable way? Well, with beautiful photo memory boards from Jen's Dream Decor. Jen also works very hard to create beautiful magnet boards, jewellery holders, and other decorative items for your home.

Oh Canada: Of all the things that you sell, which item or style is your favorite?

Jen: I really love making my Photo Memory Boards the best. I have introduced a gathering technique which I do over double ribbons which really looks lovely and romantic.

Oh Canada: Where did you learn your skills?

Jen: I took a 5 year long night school program in Interior decorating which has helped a lot in the design of products and in fabric choice. A lot of the upholstery and sewing skills I learned in my previous life as a collector bear designer and maker.

Oh Canada: Everyone has different motivations for making their unique wares. What drives you to create?

Jen: What I really love is the feeling of timelessness that comes when you create, where you look up at the clock and can’t believe how much time has passed. There is simply nothing like it.

Oh Canada: If you could learn to use any new technique or material, what would it be?

Jen: The art of upholstery is something I admire and love to do in my limited fashion in my shop. I would love to do more and larger projects like headboards.

Oh Canada: Any plans to incorporate a new product into your shop this year?

Jen: Yes, a lot of plans…I’ve become re-interested in decoupage and plan to make book ends and expand on my line of key racks and coat racks.

Oh Canada: What is your favorite thing about selling on Etsy?

Jen: I love having creative control and being part of this fabulous amazing group of talented artists.

Oh Canada: Do you have a number one tip for new sellers?

Jen: Join this team (lol) seriously, joining a team to give you support and friendship is the best thing I ever did.

Oh Canada: What is your favorite thing to buy on Etsy?

Jen: Supplies, I can’t believe how fabulous the sources are on this site. It would take years to find all these products if I didn’t have Etsy. I also love to support the other members of my teams as much as possible.

Jen: I love this frame(see photo to the left), which was a rare and wonderful garage sale find.

Shop Spotlight: Sadie Designs

Oh Canada: Of all the things that you sell, which item or style is your favorite?

Sarah: My favourite piece is always changing. Right now I really love geometric stone pendants, like the pink and green pastel triangles that I use to make my Miriam necklaces and the amazing crystal quartz pendants that I use in my pendulum necklaces.

Oh Canada: Where did you learn your skills?

Sarah: When I have an idea for something that I'd like to make I generally teach myself how to do it through a lot of research and trial and error. I do find that the people who work at local supply shops are really helpful in pointing me in the direction of new materials or helping me learn new techniques. When I was learning to use the laser cutter to make my baltic birch pieces I spent a lot of time watching amazing YouTube videos about drawing in Illustrator (the computer program that I use). I love that people take the time to make tutorials for others just out of their own love of the subject matter.

Oh Canada: Everyone has different motivations for making their unique wares. What drives you to create?

Sarah: As a landscape architecture intern, a lot of my design work stays in the computer and is done on the screen. I started making jewelry as a way to work creatively with physical materials. I love experimenting, the tiny scale of jewelry pieces, and making something that is 100% unique. Making jewelry makes me happy after a long day drafting architecture projects on the computer.

Oh Canada: If you could learn to use any new technique or material, what would it be?

Sarah: While I was finishing up my degree I bought myself a steel bench block as a promise that I would teach myself more involved metalsmithing techniques this summer. I really want to start working with copper and repurposing some of the metal plates that I used to make etchings in my fine arts degree.

Oh Canada: Any plans to incorporate a new product into your shop this year?

Sarah: I really do dream of adding photographs to Sadie Designs. I love taking pictures and have a bunch of really fun cameras. For now, my blog is where I share my photos, but I do hope to be able to offer some prints in the future in the Sadie shop. Perhaps even some large scale photographic posters.

Oh Canada: What is your favorite thing about selling on Etsy?

Sarah: Etsy has been a great place to connect with other sellers. I love being part of national and regional teams and meeting like-minded creative types. Ultimately, though, I most appreciate Etsy for giving me a fun venue to connect with potential customers from all over the world. This week I shipped orders to Sweden, Germany, Australia and Winnipeg. I love writing out those addresses, it's exciting to think of people half the world away wearing a piece of jewelry that I made.

Oh Canada: Do you have a number one tip for new sellers?

Sarah: Just keep going! It takes a while for people to learn about your shop and in the meantime you can spend your time perfecting your techniques and improving the appearance of your shop. Concentrating on making the best possible product you can will get you far, so stick with it!

Oh Canada: What is your favorite thing to buy on Etsy?

Sarah: I love shopping on Etsy! I buy a lot of jewelry and supplies, but I also love buying paper goods and accessories. I'm planning my wedding for the fall and I know I'll be buying things from a lot of fabulous Canadian Etsy shops as we get ready.

Oh Canada: What is the number one best item in your shop right now?

Sarah: The best-selling items in my shop are definitely the dipped crystal pendant necklaces. Right now amethyst is the most popular, but around the holidays it was the citrine points. I've been making these necklaces almost since I opened my shop and I really can't see myself stopping any time soon.

Shop Spotlight: My Victorian Cottage

In the spotlight this month is My Victorian Cottage. I am pleased to feature a vintage shop for the very first time in the Shop Spotlight segment. Dianne, the shop owner runs her shop out of beautiful Ontario. Her shop specializes in vintage housewares, fabric, buttons, linens, notions, and clothing sourced from local estates.

I fell in love with all of her vintage treasures and I know you will too. Vintage has a very huge place on Etsy and I am proud to bring a part of all that vintage goodness to the Shop Spotlight.

Oh Canada: Of all the things that you sell, which item or style is your favorite?

Dianne: Vintage fabrics and textiles are my favourite. I think it's genetic. I learned to sew when I was very young and I remember my father feeling all the fabrics in stores. When I got involved with vintage I just gravitated to that.

Oh Canada: When did you develop an interest in vintage items?

Dianne: I went to an auction over 20 years ago and got hooked right away. Then like many dealers I started selling so I could keep buying. The buying is the best part.

Oh Canada: Why do you have such a love for vintage wares?

Dianne: I rarely buy anything retail, even then it has to be some kind of deal. I love that vintage is different. It's not what everybody else has. It's very inexpensive compared to new. It's my lifestyle now.

Oh Canada: How do you select which vintage items to add to your shop? Where do you find your vintage treasures?

Dianne: I select a lot of my items to sell because they fit through "the slot". Postage is the bane of my internet selling existence. That said, I also list things that I really don't expect to sell. I buy for shows and rather than have things just waiting I list them for the exposure, like vintage metal tackle boxes. Anything metal is so current and whenever I list or renew a tackle box they get immediate hearts and are chosen for treasuries. I have sold a few on etsy but they are more for the exposure value.

I shop at auctions, thrift stores, the outdoor antique markets. Aberfoyle is the best locally, and twice a year I go to Brimfield, Massachusettes for the biggest outdoor shows ever. First show is in May and I absolutely can't wait. When the team was talking about vacations on beaches I was thinking about my upcoming road trip. For me, that's the best vacation.

Oh Canada: Any plans to incorporate a new product into your shop this year?

Dianne: This business is a lot about reinventing yourself to stay current, always trying new things. I did recently start selling the pillows and bags I sew in a new etsy shop.

Oh Canada: What is your favorite thing about selling on Etsy?

Dianne: I still love that total surprise when I check in and I have a sale. I love the new Activity Feed. I also love that buyers aren't afraid to spend money here because they recognize the value of Etsy.

Oh Canada: Do you have a number one tip for new sellers?

Dianne: Of course, you need good pictures. I think you need to be offering something that people want to buy. I don't know exactly. Etsy is still a lot of mystery to me, why some people get so popular and others don't. I like being on the Oh Canada Team. Etsy is a huge place and this makes for some sense of community. List and relist too for exposure in the searches. I know not everybody agrees with the relist thing.

Oh Canada: What is your favorite thing to buy on Etsy?

Dianne: I'm too practical. I think the best things to buy are supplies, zippers, findings, fabric, etc. So much choice and really good prices.

Oh Canada: What is the number one best item in your shop right now?

Dianne: The buttons are my best sellers. I just have to keep focused and list more.

Friday Finds: Handmade Rag Doll

Isn't she a cutey? When I was a little girl, I would have loved to have a doll like this one! I love her little jean skirt and jacket. This little rag doll can be found at La Chiffonniere. In this shop you will find other dolls and plushes - all made with re-cycled materials. Also, the shop offers doll clothes, cloth bags for Mom and for holding childrens' pencil crayons, and colourful, cloth wigs for children. Friday Finds: Beach Stone Ring

This unusal and unique ring is from LittleBearsMom. The stone is one of many that Molly has collected during her walks along beaches - this particular one comes from Lake Michigan, and is sandstone. In her shop you will find a large selection of rings, from her collection of beach stones, to gorgeous dyed paua shell, genuine stone cabochons and glass crystals. Shop Spotlight: Stayawake

At first I was going to introduce this shop as a children's shop, but who says grown-ups can't play with finger puppets too. Whether you're a child or a child at heart you'll definitely enjoy browsing the original and magical world of Stayawake. Find a finger puppet for you or your child and just let your imagination run wild.

Oh Canada: Of all the things that you sell, which item or style is your favorite?

Lindy: I have a large range of puppet styles available in my shop - my favourite to sew would have to be my mermaids! I've changed the style of them a little over the past year. But I love the embroidery on the tail, and the fun colours. Other than that, I love making custom puppets - puppets from my own customers imaginations and designs! That always gets my creative juices flowing, and creating something new always gives me a rush!

Oh Canada: Where did you learn your skills?

Lindy: I'm self-taught, I guess! I've never had any formal training in sewing, in fact I almost failed home-economics in high school because sewing machines and I did not get along! I'm much more comfortable with small handwork. I've always loved embroidery and making small things with my hands! In the early stages, a library book taught me a few new stitches and that was all I needed.

Oh Canada: Everyone has different motivations for making their unique wares. What drives you to create?

Lindy: I am a stay at home mom to two preschoolers, and at the end of the day I feel empty if I haven't created something. The creation drive in me is very high, you could say! I'm always making things with my kids, but sometimes when they're playing or watching a movie I can sit beside them and sew up puppets. It allows me to feel a sense of accomplishment and still be with my kids all the time. The money I make supplements our income so I can buy wonderful handmade items for my family, and to buy art supplies and program materials for a summer camp I volunteer at.

Oh Canada: If you could learn to use any new technique or material, what would it be?

Lindy: I love learning new art techniques - right now I've been playing with batik, stained glass, and collage techniques. I do love fabric though, so I hope someday I can reconcile my differences with my sewing machine and finish the quilt I started years ago!

Oh Canada: Any plans to incorporate a new product into your shop this year?

Lindy: I am always adding new puppet designs! Many come at the request of my customers, and some are ideas of mine or my children. I have thoguht about adding mobile pieces, key chains, magnets or ornaments to my shop but I am kept busy enough with puppet sales at the moment.

Oh Canada: What is your favorite thing about selling on Etsy?

Lindy: I love meeting new people! I love developing new friendships with customers and fellow sellers -amazing people I never would have met otherwise! I love the Etsy forums and teams too. Selling on Etsy gives me the freedom to buy beautiful handmade things that wouldn't normally fit in our family budget too!

Oh Canada: Do you have a number one tip for new sellers?

Lindy: Everything? LOL. I buy all my supplies on Etsy, when possible, and everything else, if I can find it on Etsy I buy from Etsy! Clothing, soap, gifts, jewellery, toys, art supplies. Everything. :) I am constantly amazed and inspired by the talent here!

Oh Canada: What is the number one best item in your shop right now?

Lindy: Biggest sellers are my woodland animals. They were the first to go into my shop two years ago, and haven't stopped selling well since!

Part of the fun of browsing Etsy is discovering new talented artisans everyday. Finding unique handmade creations that appeal to something in you and evoke a sense of wonder. Being inspired by someone else's ability to create something from nothing. That's what Dazzling Dezignz has to offer. Beautiful jewellery designs with the ability to inspire.

Oh Canada: Of all the things that you sell, which item or style is your favorite?

Elisa: I can’t say that I have a favourite style. I love making a variety of different styles to suit the many personalities of women out there. I lean more towards items that are simpler and will go with a lot but then certain personalities and outfits need a more pronounced statement.

Oh Canada: Where did you learn your skills?

Elisa: I live in a city where, for some reason, jewellery making supplies are only available at the local Michael’s store. So therefore, jewellery making classes are also in short supply. I not only buy my supplies online (Etsy being the perfect place!) but I also research techniques and materials online. There are great videos on the web that show step by step instruction. Mostly I’ve learned by just practicing, practicing, practicing!

Oh Canada: Everyone has different motivations for making their unique wares. What drives you to create?

Elisa: I love being able to create unique pieces that will make the wearer feel beautiful. It all starts... and ends... with the perfect accessory! I sometimes dream about a design and then I can’t do anything else until I make it. Often I have one element in mind and then I work around that to create the perfect piece.

Oh Canada: If you could learn to use any new technique or material, what would it be?

Elisa: Right now I’m researching through books and the internet about wire wrapping and making elements from wire. I’ve just started so you won’t see a lot of that in my shop probably until the summer. I love all the endless possibilities there are with wire in jewelry making. I can’t wait to learn it and apply it to some of my designs.

Oh Canada: Any plans to incorporate a new product into your shop this year?

Elisa: Every year I do a fundraiser for breast cancer research. Last year I made bookmarks and half of the proceeds went to the CIBC Run for the Cure. I want to do it again this year but I’d like to do something different. I have a couple of ideas but there’s nothing concrete yet. I’m hoping to get it in my shop by the beginning of summer because that is when I start doing my fundraising for the Run.

Oh Canada: What is your favorite thing about selling on Etsy?

Elisa: I absolutely love how friendly everyone is and how readily they give tips and advice. I have met a few wonderful people on Etsy. I don’t think Etsy would be the same if they didn’t offer the forums to meet people and discuss everything from their shop to what’s going on in their life. It really is an extension of your family and friends.

Oh Canada: Do you have a number one tip for new sellers?

Elisa: Well, I’m still fairly new myself but my number one tip would be not to give up! It’s a lot of hard work but it’s fun and rewarding. Just keep with it!

Oh Canada: What is your favorite thing to buy on Etsy?

Elisa: I’ve bought a number of things on Etsy. Mostly it’s jewelry supplies but I’ve also bought a few things for my kids. It’s amazing the different and unique things you can find here. I love it!

Oh Canada: What is the number one best item in your shop right now?

Elisa: I don’t have a number one best item as most of my pieces are one of a kind. You will find many different styles in my shop for the many different personalities of women out there. So please come back from time to time as I add more things almost daily. You never know what you might find!
